Ide’s Honey Farm is located on two acres in NE Indiana, just south of US 30 and between the small country towns of Larwill and Pierceton. Stan and Sandy love the country and all that it has to offer. Together, they have six adult children, nine grandchildren……..and another one on the way! Stan states: “I grew up near Logansport, Indiana, and was raised on a dairy farm, along with my older brother and my twin. We also had hogs from time to time and beef cattle. Included were a menagerie of chickens, ducks, geese, dogs and cats……..and anything we could catch (squirrels, fox, raccoons, pigeons). We made pets of them all! Our crops consisted of corn, beans, wheat and hay. It was as wholesome a life as anyone could wish for. Thanks Dad & Mom.
My grandfather also lived on a farm and kept a few beehives around. He sold comb honey to the local stores and kept his family supplied with nature’s golden sweetener. When I started beekeeping about twelve years ago, I used some of his original eight frame hives. Our little two acre spread is full of flowers (photo gallery), nut trees, fruit trees, and grapes. Several years ago I had the opportunity to purchase two hives and with the help of a local beekeeper, learned the science of managing bees. We now average twenty to thirty hives and supply several local fruit markets and coffee shops with fresh, healthy local honey. This product is made from the nectar of local wild raspberry, black locust, and tulip poplar in the spring. In the summer our bees go after basswood, varieties of clover and wild flowers. I also harvest the fall crop consisting of mostly goldenrod and wild aster. All of these make wonderfully flavored honey.
Beekeeping for us is a hobby and we try to keep it relatively small. Our goal is to meet the demand for local honey in our area, trying not to over produce or under produce. We also sell beeswax for a variety of uses. In 2008, twenty five of our hives produced 1.2 tons of honey, and through creating splits and capturing swarms, we were able to sell off ten hives to others. We often have extra honey and beeswax for sale and would be glad to send you some while it lasts. Hope you enjoy this website and contemplate becoming a keeper of bees yourself!”
